The Yellow-billed Magpie forages in the freshly mowed hay. The last of the seasonal rains move through California in May. No rain again until September or October. For a few months in the winter and spring, the coastal ranges of mountains and hills, here near Paso Robles, are a lush, green carpet of fecundity which cannot be anything other than celebrated.
