Artist's Statement
This gallery is a celebration, a synthesis of my enthusiasm for drawing and painting, my respect for science and my lifelong fascination with birds and their surroundings. Most of the birds in these paintings live in or spend parts of their lives in California. Comprised of some of the biologically richest ecosystems on the planet, California's unique habitats are falling to a singular kind of habitat, suburbia, at an unprecedented rate. In order to contribute to an understanding of the complexity of what is being poisoned, bulldozed and paved over, as well as what has been preserved, I have depicted the diversity of birds and their habitats in diverse ways: simple, complex, close-ups, landscapes, colorful and monochromatic. Within this diversity are patterns, shapes and colors to which I am repeatedly, subconsciously drawn. Look closely and you will find these are patterns, shapes and colors throughout all of my work, regardless of the species or habitat I am depicting or the medium I have used.
