Great Blue Herons are a wildly successful species, generalists that have adapted to many habitats and are not much deterred by proximity to human beings. They next every year in a few date palms at Bolsa Chica that exist from the days of the gun club. These herons are also successful because they are bred for survival of the fittest. One of these herons, the little sister in my imagination, seems to be pushed aside by her clearly older and more exuberant siblings.
