Acorn Woodpeckers are loaded with personality. Storing acorns is a chief activity and they are not quiet or stealthy going about it. They are also beautifully designed: a red patch on the tops of their heads interrupts an otherwise solid pattern of black and white. I wanted to include all of those elements—a bit of their silliness, their movements, their methods for acorn storage and their graphic plumage—and keep it as simple as possible.
